Artistic Director of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma from 2010 until last March, he held the same post at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo in 1999, at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa from 1999 to 2001, and at the Teatro delle Muse in Ancona from 2004 to 2014, from 2006 to 2007 at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, and from 2008 to 2020 he was a consultant for the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto.

In 2011 he was invited to participate in the conception of the artistic programme for the opening season of the Royal Opera House of Oman; since 2015 he has been Artistic Director of the Rete Lirica delle Marche; from 2002 to 2006, he was a member of the Steering Committee of the Ravello Foundation, heading one of its sections, and then, between 2016 and 2018 and since 2020, he has been the festival’s artistic director.

Born in Rome in 1955, Alessio Vlad studied piano at Vincenzo Vitale’s school, composition and conducting at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory and at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena with Guido Turchi and Franco Ferrara, and musical phenomenology with Sergiu Celibidache. At the same time, he attended the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy and Cesare Brandi’s art history courses at the University of Rome. After serving as a substitute conductor at the Spoleto Festival and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, where he worked with conductors such as Thomas Schippers, Bruno Bartoletti and Gianandrea Gavazzeni, directors such as Luchino Visconti and Eduardo de Filippo, and composers such as Nino Rota, and having been a pupil and collaborator of Leonard Bernstein, he began a career as a conductor that led him to conduct operas and concerts all over the world.

The Association of Italian Music Critics has awarded ten Abbiati Prizes, across various categories, to productions staged under his artistic direction by the theatres of Genoa, Ancona, Naples and Rome.

As a composer for theatre and film, he has collaborated with directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Franco Zeffirelli, Cristina Comencini, Giorgio Ferrara and Pier Luigi Pizzi, amongst others.
